4: This Week in the News

Researchers, there's a lot going on in the world right now. President Obama has said that he believes we should take action against Syria. Yesterday, 9/11, marked 12th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. A 22 year old man confessed to killing a man drunk driving on Youtube, in a video that would later go viral. Take a look at a reliable  news source and then post about a story in the news that you would like to discuss! If someone has already started a discussion about something you'd like to talk about--you may respond to them and share your thoughts as your post. Remember that this should be appropriate and academic discussion (ask questions, bring up new ideas, share your thoughts!)

Happy Writing!

  1. While there is a great deal going on in the world today, my focus in the past three days has been on the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. While I love to read, I enjoy looking at CNN's "This Week in Photos." This week there was a link to photos from the Week of 9/11/2001. I was, just as you are now, a senior in high school. My school was outside of New York City and positioned in such a way that the skyline was visible from the front of our building. On 9/11/01, I was standing with many of my classmates outside of the front of our building watching the huge mushroom cloud of smoke as the Twin Towers fell. Because of where I am from, many people worked in the city and worked near the Twin Towers including my father. My father was safe but several of my friends lost parents and family members. At the time, I believed that the devastation that my community and our country felt could not be overcome. Today, the Freedom Tower stands in the place of the towers and two huge bright beams shine in the place of the towers on 9/11. As a result of that day, many of my friends and one of my brothers joined the military and deployed and our lives have been very different since. My junior prom date was among the first killed in Afghanistan.

The more years I teach the younger my students are and the less they know about 9/11--a day that is such a HUGE part of my years in high school. I wonder how I help students to understand the importance of this day, the significance of this day. Is this a historical event that you, having been 5 or 6, feel tied to? Feel you have an understanding of? What does 9/11 mean to you?
